This past month, B-UMS students have attended two different All-State Choir conferences. 8th graders Ryder Dillon, Nick Perrine, and Kayla Smith, and 7th grader Olivia Gebler were selected to sing for the WV ACDA Middle School All-State Choir. 6th grader Reagan Russell was selected for the WVMEA All-State Children's Chorus. These students worked hard outside of class learning difficult pieces of music with Ms. Atha, then spent long hours rehearsing with the honor choirs and special guest conductors. They showed great passion and commitment to the arts and music and did a fantastic job representing Upshur County!

This past Friday, Mr. Fitzwater's wellness class had the privilege of hosting a comprehensive presentation titled Drugs of Abuse, delivered by Dr. Logan Swan, a residency pharmacist, and Dr. Caroline Fitzwater, a pharmacist at United Hospital Center. The presentation aimed to educate students on the profound and detrimental effects that illicit drugs can have on both the body and the mind. Throughout the session, Dr. Swan and Dr. Fitzwater provided detailed insights into various types of drugs of abuse, discussing their physical, psychological, and long-term impacts. The presentation also explored the risks of addiction and the broader social and health implications of drug misuse. To encourage active participation, the session incorporated several thought-provoking questions, allowing students to engage with the material and reflect on the consequences of drug abuse. Furthermore, the students were encouraged to ask questions throughout the presentation, enabling them to further explore the topic and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding substance abuse. This interactive approach helped reinforce the importance of making informed decisions and the role education plays in prevention efforts. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to United Hospital Center for their willingness to collaborate with Mr. Fitzwater in providing such an invaluable learning experience for our students. Their commitment to community education on such critical health issues is deeply appreciated. We look forward to continuing this form of outreach in the future, fostering more opportunities for students to gain knowledge and raise awareness about important health topics.
