🎉 Happy New Year from Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School! 🎉 As we step into 2026, one of our biggest resolutions is to help every student grow academically—and we need your partnership to make it happen! This 2nd semester we’re focusing on quality iReady usage. iReady is a personalized reading and math coach designed to support your child’s learning journey. Here’s what we’re asking: ✅ 45 minutes per week in both Math and Reading ✅ At least 2 passed lessons in each subject every week If your student finishes their lessons before reaching 45 minutes, they must keep working and passing lessons until they have completed their required minutes. Every extra minute counts toward building stronger skills!
When should students complete iReady?
Students should complete their iReady lessons during homeroom time. If they do not finish during homeroom, it becomes homework to complete at home.
Important Update: Students completed their Middle-of-Year Diagnostic in December. These results will be sent home with report cards on January 9th, 2026. Please review these results with your child—they are a great way to see progress and set goals for the rest of the year!
How can families help?
Talk with your student daily about their iReady progress. Celebrate their successes—every passed lesson is a win! Learn more about iReady and how you can support at home: https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/
Together, we can make this a year of growth and achievement for every student. Thank you for being an essential part of our school community! 💙
We can't wait to see your student again on January 5th, 2026!

📸 Our 8th Graders Are Getting a Life! 💼💡
This week Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School 8th grade students participated in the Get-a-Life Program, a hands-on financial literacy experience sponsored by the WV State Treasurer’s Office.
Students stepped into the shoes of adults—budgeting for housing, transportation, groceries, and more—while learning how education impacts future income. This real-world simulation teaches smart money management and decision-making skills that will last a lifetime!
👏 Huge thanks to our volunteers and partners who made this day possible. Our students are building skills for success beyond the classroom!

We are thrilled to announce an exciting new project at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School!
Thanks to the generous grant from Wes-Mon-Ty Resource Conservation & Development, our students will soon embark on the adventure of Duck-apontics—a creative and sustainable approach to conservation.
In this project, students will care for ducks, and the nutrient-rich water from their habitat will be used to irrigate plants. This hands-on experience will teach the importance of resource conservation, sustainability, and innovative agricultural practices.
A huge thank you to Wes-Mon-Ty RC&D for making this possible! Your support helps us inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. 🌱🦆

Ms. Crites entrepreneur and career, classes have been busy!
On November 12, a group 8th grade CTE Students traveled to Elkins to attend Explore Manufacturing’s Academy. They met with three manufactures to learn more about what they do, offer to WV, some careers that are available, participated in simulations, and had some hands-on learning opportunities. Following, they participate in STEM challenge. Not only did the students learn, but they demonstrated their skills of professionalism and leadership as the organizers and manufactures sung their praises for their behavior, respect, and engagement.
Explore Manufacturing Video Contest - October 28
6th Grade students visited A.F. Wendling’s Food Service to tour the facility and meet with leadership as part of the Explore Manufacturing Video Contest partnership. Students will use the experience to create a storyboard, script, and then go back to film a short production that will be entered a statewide competition. They did a great job engaging, asking meaningful questions, and using the experience to continue with the project. Once the video is complete we will send out information on how to vote!

🏆 B-UMS Intramural Kickball Championship Showdown! 🏆 During the month of October, 10 teams stepped into the B-UMS Coliseum, each determined to claim the coveted title of Kickball Champion. The energy was electric, the competition fierce, and the crowd ready to witness greatness. Yesterday, the undefeated Monster Mashers entered the field with one goal — to finish their perfect season and eliminate the Scarecrow Sluggers once and for all. But the Sluggers weren’t ready to hang up their cleats just yet. Fueled by determination and the roar of classmates, teachers, and friends filling the Coliseum stands, they delivered an incredible performance — handing the Monster Mashers their first loss and forcing a winner-take-all final game! Today’s championship rematch was nothing short of legendary. Both teams battled with heart, grit, and school spirit, taking the game into overtime in an edge-of-your-seat showdown! When the dust settled, the Scarecrow Sluggers emerged victorious with a 7–5 win, claiming the title of 2025 B-UMS Intramural Kickball Champions! 🥇🎉 The B-UMS Intramural Sports Directors want to thank every student-athlete who brought their energy, teamwork, and sportsmanship to this tournament. You made this event one to remember! Now, get those weekly i-Ready minutes and lessons completed — because the next challenge is coming soon... and it’s going to be a blast! 👀🔥 Up next: Handball! 🏐💥
