Four B-UMS students, Nick Perrine, Harper Currence, Alexis Huffman, and Ava Trent had the privilege of spending a weekend singing with over 200 other middle school students from all over the state during the WV ACDA Jr High Honor Choir. These students were selected through an audition process, and then committed their time to multiple after-school rehearsals to prepare new and complex music for this event. During the honor choir, the students were under the direction of Vincent Oakes, a conductor and clinician who has directed choirs all over the world. The students consistently showed their dedication and great musical skills throughout the rehearsals and gave an excellent performance at the end of the weekend. We are all so proud of these young musicians!
Join us as we celebrate our 8th graders and their accomplishments!

Be on the look out! Last week we had visitors from CBS, with our very own Weijia Jiang! Weijia is CBS News' senior White House correspondent based in Washington, D.C. Weijia is a B-UHS graduate and got her start in journalism right here at B-UMS with her then teacher Diane Williams. We had a fun time while her and the producers were at B-UMS, including a pep talk Weijia gave the students and staff over the school intercom. CBS is working on a special story about Weijia look for the interview on May 30th on the CBS morning show!

B-UMS Families-It’s State Testing Week! Please help us help your student! Have your student to school by 7:50am to allow them time to be settled for testing-which starts at 8:00am, refrain from picking your student up prior to 11:00am as they will be in a secure testing environment, and it cannot be interrupted. Nine of our highly skilled students from our institution had the privilege of participating in the honor band event at Glenville State University over the weekend. The university hosts two distinguished bands, namely the Pioneer Band and the Blue Band, and our students successfully auditioned for chair placements within these ensembles.
Amidst a largely high school student population at the event, we are delighted to announce that our middle school students achieved the following commendable chair placements within both bands:
🎶Pioneer Band:
💙Serenity Posey-3rd Chair Flute
🤍Leigha Manspeaker-7th Chair Flute
💙Elana Hayes-4th Chair Trumpet
🤍Micah Batchelor-3rd Chair Trombone
💙Scotty Woody-1st Chair Tuba
🤍Seth Auvil-10th Chair Percussion
🎶Blue Band:
💙Sage Fleck-12th Chair Flute
🤍Parker McCann-7th Chair Alto Sax
💙Gavin Bosley-1st Chair Horn
We commend our students for their outstanding performance and commendable placements, and we are immensely proud of their continuous efforts to excel in their musical pursuits. They have demonstrated a strong commitment to personal growth and learning and exemplify that by pursuing opportunities like this one!
Great job! 💙🤍
Check out the sports calendar here at B-UMS for the week of April 29-May 5th! Come out and support our athletes.
SCHOOL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR
Students MUST show proof of these vaccinations to enter 7th and 12th grades.
Please take your child to their health care provider or Health Department for these required vaccinations with this form. These are mandatory WV State Requirements. You will not be able to attend school for the 2024-2025 school year without these. Proof of an up-to-date physical and dental visit is also recommended.
Friday May 3rd is School Lunch Hero Day. We started a little early so our cooks can enjoy their treats all week long! At B-UMS we appreciate our cooks sooo much. They seem to always put a few extra sprinkles of love and kindness in the meals. 🍴💙
We are looking for a few good folks with strong backs, quality tape measuring and drilling skills, and the ability to go up and down a ladder.
Our School's high tunnel is set to arrive this week! (Monday or Tuesday, we don't know which day for sure yet. ) We need a few volunteers for a few hours for a few days to complete the installation. Hours would be about 8:30am-1:30pm. Please email sleput@k12.wv.us if you able to help-or comment. We will work a schedule out for our volunteers! You will be guided on what to do by our partners with Plant the Seed Project WV. Thank you!!!
Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School is excited to announce the acceptance of the Northern West Virginia American Chemical Society grant award of $750 for the Substance of Substrate project that will begin at the start of school year 2024-2025. Students in our Agriculture classes will participate in soil and water testing throughout the school year. Students will work through the scientific method to compare and contrast multiple samples of water and growing substrate from different sources such as home wells, school spigots, older school garden beds, straw bales, etc. These chemical analyses will allow students the data required to challenge their critical thinking skills and application of knowledge. With this information, students will be able to strategize for highly productive crops based on the correct water/substrate combination.
Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School is excited to begin the process of revamping our Agriculture Program for the 2024 – 2025 school year. Teacher, Jessica Manzo, is hard at work reimagining and planning experiences that will be available to our students through this program--including student access and use of a new high-tunnel greenhouse, a fully operating chicken coop (and possible addition of other livestock), reinvigoration and on-going maintenance of our fruit trees, and the addition of a multitude of other crops that will be grown in the high-tunnel in raised beds and straw bales. This project will ultimately serve thousands of students—approximately 600 students a year. Not only will students enrolled in Ag courses here at B-UMS benefit from this project, but the crops grown will be harvested and prepared for students to enjoy at lunch by our cooks. In other words, all students attending B-UMS will have the opportunity to experience the products of the Agriculture Program.
B-UMS would like to thank Dr. Edward Wovchko of WV Wesleyan College and the Northern West Virginia American Chemical Society for this grant award. Shown in the picture is Dr. Wovchko and Joyce Harris-Thacker, Communities In Schools Coordinator, who accepted the grant at the recent North WV American Chemical Society annual awards banquet on behalf of B-UMS.
